“Another round!”
The Mighty Mjaeder! shouted mightily, his mighty exclamation met by a nearly as mighty cheer from the surrounding crowd.
The bar staff at the particular pub Mjaeder! mightily found himself were being worked mightily by the mighty hero. Glass after glass after glass was passed out to the assembly, the mighty tab being mightily paid by Mjaeder! himself. As the last receptacle met the last hand, Mjaeder! mightily raised his own to his lips and drained its contents in one mighty gulp before smashing the glass on the floor.
(The establishment would generally frown mightily upon such actions, but Mjaeder!’s tips were nearly as mighty as Gloenjir itself)
“Another!”
A cheer once more erupted from the multitude as the staff scrambled to fill the latest order- They’d already sent their bar back out to purchase as many new glasses as he could find and luckily he’d just returned. Soon they’d run the risk of running out of alcohol itself, but with the kind of money they were making tonight they would be happy to shut down for a few days and restock. Drinks were rushed to the crowd, who began chanting for their personal (and Earth’s as a whole) hero.
“MJAEDER! MJAEDER! MJAEDER! MJAEDER!”
Mjaeder! smiled mightily and accepted his glass, but as he raised it to his mighty lips his smile faded, replaced by a look of mighty melancholy. With half a sigh, Mjaeder! proceeded to drain his glass, almost as mightily as the last draught. However this glass did not meet the same fate as the last, as Mjaeder! set it upon the bar intact. He then produced a coin purse filled with gold and tossed it upon the bar.
“I’m afraid that shall have to be all for the evening, my mighty friends, but rest assured, the Mighty Mjaeder! shall soon return!”
A handful of moans of disappointment were easily drowned out by the mighty cheer for the Kasglaedian warrior, who plastered a mighty smile upon his mighty face and held it till he had fully exited the bar. Once touched by the night air, his expression turned to that of mighty introspection as he mightily leaped into the air.
Some time later
“99 casks of mead on the tower, 99 casks of mead! Drink one down, smash it to the ground! 98 casks of mead on the tower!”
The Mighty Mjaeder! set atop Tokyo tower, where he indeed had 99 (actually, 98, having just drained one and smashed it to the earth far below) casks of mead lined up on the ledge. Mjaeder! reached for his next cask, but was interrupted from his liquid ruminations by the unexpected arrival via climbing up from the window below of Bob the Frost Giant.
“Mjaeder!, what are you doing?”
“Drinking!” he mightily declared.
“That much I know. The street is littered with chattered casks… I thought you’d be far lower in your song than 98 when I got here…”
“I began at 1,000.” Asgardians don’t f*ck around.
“Well, then, that explains it.”
“Take one, my friend!” Mjaeder! mightily ordered, handing a cask to Bob, “Drink with me!”
“Mjaeder!, what’s going on? I know you enjoy celebrations as much as the next Viking, but this is extreme even for you.”
“Nonsense! The night is quiet, I am enjoying the fruits of my… of our mighty labors in protecting this fine world. Now drink!”
“Mjaeder!, you’re not yourself, and I can tell. What’s wrong? Do you fear Megapwn will return?”
“Of course not! And if he did, I’d dispatch him mightily!”
“Are you worried about the examination of alien crown?”
“No, no, Blue Mantis is making fine progress, I trust he is the right man for the job.”
“Then what?”
Mjaeder! sighed mightily, “Do you know what today is, my friend?”
“Uh… Friday?”
“No. Well, yes, but that is not what I meant.”
“Then what?”
“Today is my 3,000th birthday.”
“Oh,” Bob said, dropping down to sit on the ledge next to him, “Wow.”
“Indeed.”
Bob accepted the cask Mjaeder! offered and the 2 drank.
“I know it can be hard to be away from your family at times like this, Mjaeder!, but the people of this world love you, and, well, you’ve got me…”
“No, my friend, though I appreciate the sentiment, it’s not that. We of Asgard are used to each other’s absences. I am well despite the lack of family.”
“Then what’s bothering you?”
“Bob, by the time my father had reached this age, he’d concurred the dwarves, the elves, the Frost Giants, bested the Bilge snipes, united all of Kasglaed, forged the realm of Asgard, and become Allfather to the universe… What have I done? Many battles won, surely, but… nothing. Nothing to compare to Odin’s greatness. I am letting my life slip through my fingers and accomplishing nothing…”
“Mjaeder!, that’s ridiculous! Maybe you haven’t accomplished all that Odin had by this point, but he’s Odin! None have ever done as much before nor since! And, my friend, you have limitless time ahead of you. You are ageless, you have the eons to forge your own legacy. And your accomplishments are nothing to dismiss! Your glory is worthy of countless songs! Mjaeder! you saved this entire world! Billions of lives freed from slavery by your mighty deeds! Mjaeder!, this is a whole new world, a whole new universe. You may not have risen to become Allfather of Kasglaed, but you could be Allfather here! Or if not, you could damn sure be this realms greatest hero. My friend, you already are… And you’ll only grow in this roll now that you’ve embraced it. My friend, you have no reason to be sorrowful. Embrace this new life, and it can be anything you want it to be…”
Mjaeder! stared mightily at his giant friend.
“… Bob… I’m sorry I beat you thousands upon thousands of times.”
Bob chuckled.
“You have wisdom I never realized in Kasglaed. But in this strange new reality, I shall take your words to heart. It is time to mightily shake myself from this stupor and rejoin this world as its mightiest hero!”
Mjaeder! got to his feet wobbily and moved to jump from the ledge.
“Uh, Mjaeder!…”
“Yes, my friend?”
“Might want to wait till you sober up a little before heroing again.”
“… Good call.”
Bob looked out over the cityscape.
"... You know, as much as I like this world, I do miss all the fjords."
"I was just going to say..."
