Sana stood at the very edge of her camp in Hornet's Marsh. Overhead, the skies were graying quickly. Fred looked up with apprehension.
"You thinking we should head somewhere dry? The rain doesn't bother me any, but you..."
"I'll be fine," Sana said, staring into the clouds. "I've seen a lot worse than a little rain." Then Sana turned her back to Fred. "You're welcome to leave, Big Blue, despite your reservations. Thanks for your help."
"Oh no no," Fred said, taking pains to settle himself on the ground without shaking things too much. He tried crouching, but eventually gave up and laid down on his belly. "Come on, Sana. You dragged me out of my 'Sad Hulk' semi-retirement. You...this'll sound dopey, but you reminded me how exciting it feels to help you humans."
Fred looked up and saw that Sana was smirking as she started another fire. "How does a dragon the size of my first house know about The Hulk?"
"It's a long story. I spent some time with Sean Connery in my youth. He's a big comic book fan."
"What?"
"Nevermind, Sana."
They sat in silence for a moment, soaking in the sounds of the dark marsh around them, the utter tranquility.
"I can't stand this," Sana says. "This place. The quiet. I'm a busy city girl. I've lived in Tokyo my entire life. Now these monsters have taken everything over. And...there's worse. Out there."
"Worse?"
Sana sat directly in front of Fred and pet the top of his scaled head. "Can I trust you?"
"Yes."
"There is a...man, for lack of a better term, in the city who is worse than most any monster. Because he offers up people like bait. Hundreds of them. My..." two tears ran down her face "...my family."
"Where is he?" Fred said, his muscles twitching.
"Come into my tent, Fred. Well, at least stick your head in. I need to show you something."
Sana went inside. Outside, the skies ripped open and it began to rain.
