“Hello, is this Tokyo Towing? I just ran my truck off the road. I can't get out of... Hello?”
I checked the cell phone a couple more times, just to be the on the safe side, but the call was cut short. I stood there, beside my trailer, in a deep ditch on the side of the road, and called the towing company again. I had bars. My battery isn't low. I nodded off for a short second, lost control, and found myself wheel-deep in mud and wet sand.

What a inconvenient time to have an accident! Of course, just as I need some emergency help, the world falls apart. That's my luck! My life is usually easy-going and mistake-free, but, when it's not, bad things turn to worst-case scenarios and nightmares quick. I just don't understand. Did I forget to pay my phone bill? Things weren't adding up.
It is my fault, after all. I shouldn't be taking this much overtime. Shipments have been so far behind, supervisors have allowed drivers to deliver crate whenever possible. I suppose I should have taken it easy, not tried to collect too many hours at once, and considered the responsibility of a professional truck driver. We – I am not normally this callous. I guess it's just one of those chance encounters, when the planets and stars align, when everything in the world goes ka-

“What the – !” I shouted, instantly covering my head from the concussive blast. “What in the hell is that?”
What feels like a wave of chaos and noise washes over me, as a shock wave of a distant explosion lights up the distant horizon. Suddenly, I feel my care for my truck slowly slip away.
What just happened? What's happening? Are these random accidents related, adding up to some larger catastrophe? There is plenty of history to shake us from our numb everyday realities. As I walk onto the pavement, over the gutter, trying to find a better view of this nonsense, the pulsating chatter of a helicopter cuts through the trees behind my head. I can feel the wind from his blades, as it darts towards the explosion.
A feeling of shame wells up in me, as now I begin to worry about my wife and kids back home. Was it wrong of me to be enthralled and glued to the panic and urgency, before the welfare of myself and the ones I love? I don't know, but I sure hope my communication problems with the towing company is on there side and nothing is wrong with mine. I just got this thing.

Ludicrous! I know the home telephone should still be up. What the hell is going on? If only I was closer to the city, I could see, but, from this distance, it's just an orange glow. That does me no good. I move forward, but it quite a hike. A few miles, at the least, but that doesn't matter. I am moving forward. An strange feeling occurred to me, as I started my walk back into the city. I look back and turn forward again, and notice not a single other vehicle is on the road. I am alone.
